Supernovae in Three-Dimension A Link to Gamma-Ray Bursts

چکیده
Observational consequences of a jet-driven supernova (SN) explosion model are presented. The results are compared in detail with optical observations of SN 1998bw associated with a Gamma-Ray Burst. It is shown that the jet model is able to reproduce virtually all the optical observations available for this SN, although a spherical model fails to explain some of observed features. Because of the viewing angle effect, the required kinetic energy of the SN ejecta is reduced to ∼ 2 × 10 erg as compared to that obtained by the previous spherical model (∼ 5× 10 erg), but this is still much larger than that of a canonical SN (∼ 10 erg).

Stellar Explosions: from Supernovae to Gamma-ray Bursts
Current understanding of core collapse and thermonuclear supernovae is reviewed. Recent progress in unveiling the nature of cosmic gamma-ray bursts (GRB) is discussed, with the focus on the apparent link of several GRBs with an energetic subclass of stellar explosions, type Ib/c core-collapse supernovae. This relation provides the strong case that the GRB phenomenon is connected with the final ...
متن کاملA White Dwarf Merger Paradigm for Supernovae and Gamma-Ray Bursts
Gamma-ray bursts can appear to be a hundred times as luminous as supernovae, but their underlying energy source(s) have remained a mystery. However, there has been evidence for some time now of an association of gamma-ray bursts with supernovae of Type Ib and Ic, a fact which has been exploited by a number of models, to explain the gamma-ray burst phenomenon. Here we interpret the results of ba...
متن کاملAn Hst Search for Supernovae Accompanying X-ray Flashes
We present the results from an Hubble Space Telescope/ACS search for supernovae associated with Xray flashes 020903, 040701, 040812 and 040916. We find strong evidence that XRF020903 (z = 0.25) was associated with a SN 1998bw-like supernova and confirm this using optical spectroscopy at t ∼ 25 days. We find no evidence, however, for SN1998bw-like supernovae associated with the other three event...
متن کاملAn asymmetric energetic type Ic supernova viewed off-axis, and a link to gamma ray bursts.
Type Ic supernovae, the explosions after the core collapse of massive stars that have previously lost their hydrogen and helium envelopes, are particularly interesting because of their link with long-duration gamma ray bursts. Although indications exist that these explosions are aspherical, direct evidence has been missing. Late-time observations of supernova SN 2003jd, a luminous type Ic super...
متن کاملThe Synoptic Swift Synergy – Catching Gamma-Ray Bursts Before They Fly
The advent of large panoramic photometric surveys of the sky offers the possibly of exploring the association of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) with supernovae. To date, a few gamma-ray bursts have been connected possibly with supernovae: GRB 980425 – SN 1998bw, GRB 011121 – SN 2001ke, GRB 970228 and GRB 980326. A combination of a large detection rate of GRBs and rapid coverage of a large portion of t...
